About
Car Payment Calculator is a free, no-signup web tool that estimates monthly auto loan payments. It runs entirely in your browser — there is no server, no account, no advertising, and no tracking.
The goal is a transparent calculator that shows the math: real-time updates as you type, credit-tier APR estimates, state-level vehicle tax handling, full amortization schedules, and side-by-side term comparisons (24 to 84 months). The tool also runs in reverse — enter a monthly budget and it returns the maximum vehicle price that fits.
This calculator is also commonly known as a car loan calculator or auto loan calculator. The math is identical across all three names; we use "Car Payment Calculator" because that's the search phrase most U.S. buyers type when trying to figure out what they can afford.
Who built this
Built and maintained by an independent developer. No corporate affiliation, no lender partnerships, no sponsored content (as of April 2026). If that ever changes, this page will be updated first.
Coverage
The amortization math works for any country and any currency. The ZIP-code-based vehicle tax lookup covers all 50 U.S. states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Users in Canada, the U.K., or elsewhere can leave the ZIP field blank and enter their local tax rate manually — all other features still work.
Methodology
Loan math
The standard amortization formula used by U.S. banks and required for Truth in Lending Act disclosures:
M = P × r(1+r)n / ((1+r)n − 1)
Where M is the monthly payment, P is the principal (the financed amount, after down payment, trade-in, and applicable tax), r is the monthly interest rate (APR ÷ 12 ÷ 100), and n is the number of monthly payments. The reverse mode solves the same equation for P given M.
APR estimates by credit tier
The default APR shown when you select a credit tier (Excellent / Good / Fair / Poor) is a snapshot of national averages drawn from Bankrate Auto Loan Average Rate and the Experian State of the Automotive Finance Market report.
These are reviewed quarterly; last reviewed April 2026. Your actual rate from any specific lender will depend on your full credit profile, the vehicle, the loan term, and current market conditions, and may differ by 1–4 percentage points in either direction. Always shop multiple quotes before signing.
State vehicle tax rates
The ZIP-to-state tax routing covers all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico via a two-tier lookup: 2-digit ZIP prefix maps to the dominant state for that range, with 3-digit overrides for boundary ZIPs that fall into a different state (Rhode Island within Massachusetts prefixes, Delaware within Pennsylvania, Mississippi within Tennessee, Hawaii within California, Alaska within Washington).
Each state's rule is a small data structure containing the base rate, the trade-in credit policy, and any applicable flat tax cap. Sources cross-referenced from each state's department of revenue or DMV publications, plus the Tax Foundation annual sales tax compendium. Reviewed quarterly.
Trade-in tax credit handling
Most states reduce the taxable purchase amount by the trade-in value. This calculator models the following exceptions accurately:
- No trade-in credit: California, Hawaii, Maryland, Virginia, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico — sales tax applies to the full purchase price regardless of trade-in.
- Partial credit (capped): Illinois caps the credited trade-in amount at $10,000.
- Flat fee with cap: South Carolina charges a 5% Infrastructure Maintenance Fee capped at $500, with no trade-in deduction.
Known limitations
This calculator deliberately does not model:
- County or city local sales tax (which can add 0.5–4% in major metros — NYC ≈ +4.9%, Chicago ≈ +4%, Los Angeles ≈ +2.5%, Seattle ≈ +3.6%)
- Georgia's Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) is approximated as a flat 6.6% sales tax; the real TAVT is based on the vehicle's fair market value and applies once at purchase
- Delaware's 4.25% motor vehicle document fee (Delaware has no sales tax)
- Lender-specific origination fees, dealer doc fees, gap insurance, or extended warranties
- Lease scenarios (this tool is for purchase loans only; lease math depreciates the vehicle differently)
- Military, nonprofit, disabled-veteran, or other special-status exemptions that some states offer
Update cadence

Third parties
The only external resource this page loads is Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com, fonts.gstatic.com) for typography. Google may receive your IP address and User-Agent string when these font files are fetched, per Google's privacy policy. We don't currently self-host the fonts but may switch in a future update to remove this dependency.
Future analytics
If we ever add usage analytics, we will use a privacy-respecting tool that does not use cookies, does not collect personal data, and does not track users across sites — Plausible Analytics is the most likely choice. This page will be updated before any such tool is added.
GDPR & CCPA
Because we collect no personal data, no cookies, and no tracking identifiers, the data subject rights, processing notices, and consent banner obligations under GDPR and CCPA do not apply to the calculator itself. The Google Fonts dependency is a separate matter governed by Google's policies.

Disclaimer
This calculator provides estimates for educational and planning purposes only. It is not a binding loan quote, lender offer, or financial advice.
Not a substitute for a lender quote
The APR shown for each credit tier is a national average snapshot, not the rate your specific lender will offer. Real lender quotes depend on your full credit report, vehicle details (year, model, condition, mileage), loan-to-value ratio, debt-to-income ratio, employment history, and current market conditions. Two lenders pulling the same credit report on the same day can offer rates that differ by 2–4 percentage points.
Not a substitute for a tax professional
Vehicle sales tax varies by county, city, and special district in addition to the state rate shown here. Some states apply different rules for new versus used vehicles, in-state versus out-of-state buyers, leased versus purchased vehicles, or military, nonprofit, and disabled-veteran exemptions. We do not model these. For an exact tax figure, consult your dealer's title-and-tax estimate or your state's department of revenue.
No financial advice
Nothing on this page or in this calculator constitutes financial, legal, tax, or credit advice. We are not a licensed financial advisor, mortgage broker, lender, dealer, or attorney. Decisions about whether to take a loan, how much to borrow, what term to choose, or whether a particular vehicle fits your budget should involve a qualified professional and your full personal financial picture — not a quick browser tool.
No liability
Use of this calculator is at your own risk. The independent developer behind this site disclaims liability for any financial decision made on the basis of these estimates. The tool is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied.
